De-Stressing Foods

Stress can lead to physical ailments such as cancer, depressions, anxiety, sleeplessness, headaches, and much more. Besides relaxation techniques and massages, certain foods can help you de-stress, according to Dr. Sara Gottfried, a Harvard-trained integrative physician who helps women feel at home with their bodies again.

Dr. Gottfried recently appeared on The Ricki Lake Show and recommended five stress relieving foods.

1.  Beets
The red vegetable is a good source of folate (vitamin Bc) that helps the nervous system and liver which get congested under stress.

2. Dark Chocolate
A great source of magnesium & anti-oxidants, consumption of dark chocolate relaxes blood vessels, reduces blood pressure, and shown to lower cortisol, the stress hormone.

3. Green Tea
Anti-Oxidants found in green tea helps with physiological stress and a genetic tendency toward stress called "COMT" gene.

4. Wild Alaskan Salmon
Omega 3's found in this fish lowers cortisol when it's misbehaving and helps with focus.

5. Avocado
A source of potassium, the green fruit is excellent for adrenal glands which are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones in response to stress.
