kid psychics: we were born this way

On the Psychics Go Beyond episode of The Ricki Lake Show, we meet a teen boy who first discovered his psychic abilities at just five years old, sharing his own personal and difficult journey to accepting his gift. Physical Medium Eden Sustin is no stranger to that unusual discovery. After watching her grandmother use "automatic writing" in her work to help the police department find missing children, she realized she, too, possessed the ability to connect with beyond, picking up the pen when she was 17.

Sidney and Taytum, psychic sisters

So Eden wasn't all that surprised when her own daughters, Sidney*, 12 and Taytum, 9, had the same realization, but at a much younger age. The girls share their personal experience with me.

When did you first notice something was different?

Sidney: I was sitting in my room writing my 5th grade Historical Character report on Georgia O'Keefe. My hand was feeling funny; tingly and weak. I felt like I couldn't write. My mom said that's how her hand feels sometimes when Spirit is trying to come through. She asked if I wanted to try to channel to see what they want to say to me.

Taytum: I was 8 years old when I discovered I could see and hear Spirits. I was about to go to sleep at night and I saw a little girl standing behind my mom! At first I thought it was my sister but we checked and she was in her bed sleeping. My mom explained to me what it was and that there's nothing wrong with me.

How did you react? Were you freaked out?

Sidney: Even though I was really scared, I tried it. My mom sat with me for support. The pen took over and wrote really fast. I was shocked! The writing looked exactly like Georgia O'Keefe's writing and she said it was her! She told me she was thankful I chose to do a report on her and that her and I were very much alike. She said I should keep drawing (cuz I like to draw) and she would help me. After that time I always wanted to draw. Sometimes I channel Georgia and I create things that look like her drawings.

Taytum: It was really scary for me. After a while, it happened more and more and I wasn't so scared anymore. Sometimes I hear them calling my name too! Also sometimes I can hear other people's thoughts in their heads like I know what they're thinking! It's kind of funny.

Do your friends know about your gift? How did they react?

Sidney: Sometimes I talk about my abilities with my friends. They are all fascinated by it and think its cool. My mom taught me that I should only use it for good and not think it's a game. She also says its my choice to decide what I want to do with my ability. Right now I only use it when I feel confused about something. They help me understand myself better.

Taytum: I have two very special friends that I can talk to about this. I know they love me no matter what and they make me feel safe when we talk about it together. They are like my second family and they understand me. That makes me feel so good.

What would you want to tell those who may not understand or who may think this is crazy?

Sidney: Because my mom has been connecting with Spirit my whole life, it feels very normal to me. I actually feel safe knowing I can connect anytime if I need extra help with something. That's a good feeling!

Taytum: I think it's pretty special to have these abilities. I feel safe with it and it helps me to figure myself out and understand the people around me much better.
My favorite part is that I get to hear from my great grandparents who I never even met and know they love me so much!

How would you react if you discovered your child had psychic abilities?
